Creative Critical Reflection
1. How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
I personally believe that my product challenged the conventions that would typically be used in a music video. For example, in the beginig of my music video I created a scene were I am supposed to be reading a magazine, with the magazine cover facing the camera. On the front and back of that magazine, I was able to write the title of the song, the artist it was made by, and who the music video was made by ( which was of course me). I feel that this challenges typical music video conventions because normally the title and information of music video ‘s tend to be edited into the video. I however, was able to incorporate the title of music video into the opening shot in a way that naturally fit the story my music video is portraying. Another way I believe I challenged music video conventions, is through animation. When it comes to music videos, the video is either all animation, o no animation. In my music video, I chose to use both live-action shots and animation. Not too mention animation in music videos s pretty rare in the first place. Live-action is normally preferred I music videos, so i figured including some animation might make the video a bit more fun and fresh. How does my music video represent social groups or issues? Well, my music video is meant to be comedic, but I know tha the person who made the song, Jack Stauber originally mad the song after a friend told him “stop being depressed and get a real job”. As a result, he made s song about being a mom. This was an idea that I incorporated into my music video. The entire music video, which was starring myself, was meant to be a character who’s supposed to act like a mom, and represents mothers in general. In Jack Stauber’s song and in my music video, the message being told is that being a mom is the hardest job that there is.
2. How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
I would say that my product engages with audiences because its supposed to be comedic. If it was very dramatic and serious, the I feel that I would have lost my audiences, and it would have bored them. By making my product comedic, I was able to make something that was more upbeat and fun. I feel that because of my products fauna and light-hearted tone I was able to open a whole ne window of fun opportunities. Like the opening shot for example. Having a scene of character reading a magazine, but the cover of the magazine being the title of the music video, directly engages the audience becausee it’s something that isn’t usually done. I believe that the very reason I was able to incorporate this type of a scene into my product was because of its light-hearted tone. I think using animation creates a similar effect. Since animation isn’t normally used in music videos. I think it engages with the audiences because it’s something new and different. The music video is not supposed to take itself to seriously . That being said, my product would most likely be directed towards younger audiences, because an older audience might want something more gritty, a bit more real. If this product were to be distributed as a real media text, it would probably just be distributed through YouTube. It sounds silly, but all the big music videos, like vevo for example, distribute their videos on YouTube, wher they get millions and millions of views. Virtually every artist and songwriter has a YouTube channel, and its hard to find a day in which a music video isn't on the trending page. NOt to mention the fact that I already said that my product would be distributed towards a younger audience, so YouTube would be the perfect place to upload a music video, because YouTube is prominently used by young people.
3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
I would actually say that my production skills developed greatly throughout this project. In my previous project (m commercial) I had a lot of problems when it came to gathering props for example. When writing my storyboard, I was including props that I assumed I already had, but when I began filming I really didn’t have most of the props i needed. For my music video, I made sure to be realistic. I made sure to create a story that was based off the material I knew I could use. This made me much more prepared once the filming process came around. Once I began my filming process, I noticed that it had come easier to achieve the different shots I wanted to achieve, yet the scenes i was filming was more complex compared to the scenes I was creating in my commercial I’m assuming this means that I have become more efficient in the filming process. I also feel that my editing skills have improved greatly as well. In my commercial project, I feel that my cuts were very abrupt, especially in comparison to th elsewhere-ace of the project. It felt like every cut felt our of place. For my music video, I handled my cuts very differently. I would try to incorporate my cuts, with the music. So if there was a beat drop for example, I would use that opportunity to cut to the next scene. If there is around of a clap in the song, I would use that sound as a way of incorporating a cut that didn’t feel out of place. I think I understand the pacing of different cuts and different shots a bit better now. In the beginning of my video, when the song is still ramping up, I chose to use cuts that were more causal, purposely making my shots connect into a more casual pace. Later on the video, when I’m supposed to be shopping for clothes frantically after seeing a “SALE” sign, I purposely had shorter takes with faster cuts, By doing this, I was able to create an effect that made that moment feel a bit faster and a bit more chaotic, which was indeed my original intention.
4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
Well, when filming the project I just used the camera app on my iPhone. The reason I used an iPhone is backseat its small, and easy to move around. This meant that I was able to incorporate different camera angles, seeing as a phone very maneuverable. once i went through the album on my phone and chose that takes that I liked, I then uploaded those takes to my iPad. The reason I uploaded my takes to my iPad, is because my iPad has the app: “iMovie” which was used as my main editing software. Using iMovie on my phone would have been too difficult, because I would be using the app on a smaller screen. So once I had all the shots I needed on my iPad, I would then upload all these shots onto iMovie in the correct order. the only shot I had yet to do at the time was my animation. To do the animation, is used the free app: “FlipaClip” which I had downloaded on my iPad. Once my animation was complete a simply screen recorded it an uploaded it into iMovie as well. To actually upload the song being used in my music video, I used YouTube to record about sixty seconds of the song. I then uploaded this audio into iMovie as well. Once that was done all that was left to do was to upload the video onto youtube, so that i would then upload and submit the video on this site, blogger.
