Genre Decision Blog
For my opening sequence I have chosen science fiction as my genre. I came to this decision mainly because the pitch that I used for my film already uses multi-dimensional travel as its main plot-device, and I feel that this type of subject can be considered science fiction. I was also thinking about using horror as my main genre, but I’m not sure that horror would necessarily match with such a complicated subject. I was also thinking of having action as my genre, especially if I wanted to use action to captivate the audience in my films opening. However, I still feel that the idea of multi-dimensional travel is still to complicated for an action film. I will probably still include some action in my film, but it won’t be the main genre. I also saw that films that use subjects such as the multi-verse and time travel are already put under the category of science fiction. I also chose to use science fiction because I plan on putting science fiction elements in the opening of my film, as I hope to captivate my audience, and peek there interest in the film. Still, it was hard to shows specifically between science fiction and action, because films such as The Matrix are science fiction films, but they are also very much considered action films. In fact, a lot of the action form the Matrix still holds up today. However, action wouldn’t really be able to heavily contribute to the plot of a science fiction film. Action can provide excitement, but it doesn’t necessarily affect the overarching story. Especially in a science-fiction film that uses far fetched ideas. As I said before my film would probably include action in it, but the action would not be the films main purpose. One of the other reasons I chose science-fiction is because by choosing this genre I can create a sense of complexity to my story. I like it when a film can be complex, but not overly complex to a point in which I don’t understand the film. I think if I can balance out simplicity and complexity in my film, I can create a well-paced film that causes the audience to understand the film, while also asking questions. I think it’s great when the audience can leave the theatre while still theorizing the movie. This means that the audience was following the story, while also trying to understand was the film was saying. That is why I chose science fiction as my genre.
