Genre Research: Interstellar

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

Similar to the film Inception, Interstellar plays with the idea of travel between worlds. The type of travel the film portrays subjects such as travel between pace, time, and dimensions, which are all ideas that I have based my story on, specifically travel between dimensions. I think that Interstellar portrays these ideas particularly well because it presents these far fetched ideas through a realistic point of view. As a result the audience views the story in a more realistic point of view. It allows the audience to insert themselves into the story, and think about what they would do if they were in the same situation as the characters. I hope to present these ideas in a similar way as I show my ideas through a lens that feel a bit more real, while still holding on t o those classic science fiction elements. This feels like the basis of how science fiction is presented within Interstellar. I would also use a similar tone as Interstellar, because I think the intensity of Interstellar is something I would try implement into my own story, and this type of intensity is used across Nolan’s other science fiction films.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that you liked?

As I stated befor I enjoyed the tone of the film because it allowed for a strong sene of intensity. Another elect of the film that I like was the lighting. I know that the people working on the film used very specific lighting in order to match the look of space. They apparently used videos taken from he International Space Station as reference. I also really appreciated  the set design, as the cast went to many real locations, and they also had to build many sets and miniatures for the spaceship used in the film. The costumes were also well done, as futuristic spacesuits were designed specifically fr the cast members to wear.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

Similar to inception I wasn’t the biggest fan of the dialogue in this film. It feels clunky at the expense of exposition. Something that also didn’t appeal to me was the pacing. I feel that with all the position placed at the begging of the film, with more exposition trickled throughout the rest of the film it can make the film feel a bit slow. One of the main rues of cinema is how don’t tell. Meaning that I would have preferred if the film found a way to aurally inform the audience. Instead of dumping important information out of know where. As a result it makes it seem as though the film is moving slower than it should be.
