Genre research: Science fiction & horror

Science Fiction
  • Common CAMS in the genre
Science fiction usually has establishing shots to show a shot in space or on another planet. It’s basically used to establish a fictional setting. This then transition ps into master shots as we see where the characters are within the scene/setting.
  • Common ClAMPS in the genre
Often times costumes in science fiction can seem otherworldly or futuristic, while also having props that Macy has the same aesthetic. Meaning the props can match the futuristic aesthetics of the clothing, and the futuristic clothing can also match with the aesthetic of the setting.
  • Common Editing in your genre
Slow-motion can be pretty common in science fiction, as many big-budget science films can use slow motion in action scenes. Often times there are also fast-paced cuts to keep up with the exiting nature of science fiction.
  • Example films of your genre
Examples such as The Matrix, Star Wars, The Avengers and the Terminator franchise can be considered science fiction.
  • Common sound in your genre
Sound common in my genre would be diegetic sound through dialogue and any sound coming form on screen. There is also lots of non-diegetic sound, especially when background music is added. Ambient sound is also used for background sounds that can only be in science fiction (such as sounds from another planet for example).
  • What elements of the genre that you like?
I really like the costume design in science fiction. I feel that the people working on the film get to take a lot of creative liberties especially when designing something that isn’t real/ something that’s fictional.
  • What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?
I feel that something that doesn’t commonly work in science fiction in dialogue. Because of teh massive scope and ideas found in science fiction, I feel that the director may lose focuses on realistic dialogue between characters compared to the fictional setting. Therefor I think this is something that needs to be improved upon in the genre.

Horror
  • Common CAMS in the genre
Close-ups can be used very often in the horror genre in order to show a characters horrified expression. Two-shot are also used to show what could possibly be a civilian and a killer in the same shot in horror. Low-angles are also used to view certain characters from below to make them more frightening, and tracking shots are commonly used to show the protagonist running from the story’s threat.
  • Common ClAMPS in the genre
Costumes can often times be used to make a character more frightening and intimidating (like Freddy Kruegur and Jason for example). Locations in the genre can also be used to make the tone of the film more frightening, especially if your filming in a cemetery or abandoned warehouse.
  • Common Editing in your genre
Long takes are used commonly in horror in order to build tension over longer periods of time. These long takes would then often cut to a jump scare in the film. There can also be de scene with fast-paced editing to create more chaotic, and horrific scenes.
  • Example films of your genre
Films from the horror genre include A Quiet Place, Get Out, Alien, The Invisible Man, and The Shining.
  • Common sound in your genre
Common sound in this genre includes, non-diegetic sound in order to create suspenseful background music as well as ambient sound, which can often times be used to make a scene more creepy and eerie. Sound motifs are also very common in the genre as they are often associated with a specific horrifying character within the film.
  • What elements of the genre that you like?
I really enjoy the long takes used in horror. I think this is a perfect way to build suspense within the audience, especially if you include ambient sound within the long take. By doing this, you get the audience to be on the edge of there seats as they wait for what’s going to happen next.
  • What elements of the genre do not appeal to you?
There have been many times where low key lighting has been appealing to me in horror. I understand that darker lighting sets the mood of a scene, but sometimes the scene can become too dark and I can’t feel all that casted if I cant see what’s on screen.
