Production Blog: Props

Before beginning the filming process, I needed to gather my props that I would use in my set design. One of the main props I originally chose was a calendar. As our protagonist in the film jumps from reality to to reality, I was thinking of having him look at a calendar in each new reality. With every reality he goes to, the date on the calendar changes. I’m currently contemplating if I should include this detail, because I feel the my opening sequence is already very complicated and bloated. The calendar, however, can be a visual representation that the audience can understand. Another prop I need is the magic crystal that causes the protagonist to travel through realities. Weirdly enough I already have a crystal at home, but its just a prop and its probably not real. One of the only other props that really needed to be used was my cabinet. This cabinet is going to be the location in which the crystal is held. As far as set design, the main other elements used are location and costumes, which I will talk about in an upcoming blog. Other props that I may be using are: multi-colored crystals, a flashlight, and a baseball bat. The multi-colored crystals, could be used to represent crystals from different realities. The flashlight could be used to illuminate the screen when the crystal is touched. I plan to have a white flash of light appear when the crystal is touched. I also plan to have the protagonist meet an alternate version of himself from another reality. The other version of his self, confused as to who our protagonist is, holds a baseball bat in self defense. This prop might be a bit more difficult, as I don’t actually know if I have a baseball bat in my possession. The multi-colored crystals might be a bit hard to find. If I really feel the need to stick to this idea, I may change the color of one plane crystal in the editing process.
