Genre Research: Inception

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

The film Inception has a similar idea to my film because I’m using the idea of traveling between dimensions in a very similar way to how Inception uses the idea of traveling between dreams. In Inception our main protagonists have to go on a mission in which they travel through different dreams, with the risk of remaining within the dream with no escape. My film traits alternate dimensions in a similar way to dreams, as our protagonist gets trapped in different dimensions and struggles to find his way back to his home dimension. I found the idea of traveling between traveling between dimensions, time, and space interesting and complex, so I figured I would implement a similar idea into my story. I feel that films such as Inception visualize this idea very well.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that you liked?

I liked the visual effects use in the film as well as set design. Although the film doesn’t use visual effects as often as other science fiction films do, the vfx tries to appear as realistic as possible when it is used. By using science fiction as its genre, Inception can use visuals as buildings flip on top of each other, mirrors create optical illusions, and more. I also liked the set design because since the film uses dreams to push its plot forward, the film can use more obscure settings as it switches from a fight scene in a hallway, to a chase in the mountains, with every set piece feeling new and different. As a result it makes the film more exiting. You can tell that the set design is very complicated and detailed, which makes the film feel more realistic with real settings.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

I feel that the film didn’t make good use of its dialogue. I feel that since the film had such a large and complex story, many of the characters had to deliver out of place exposition. This makes the dialogue feel clunky and unnatural. I feel that dialogue should often be used to ground the characters, and make the relationship between characters feel more real. Inception doesn’t really do that, as the dialogue makes the characters feel more like plot devices instead of real people. I feel that some of Nolan’s other movies have a similar issue. I feel that by creating realistic dialogue withe science fiction can help the audience relate the characters. It makes the characters fell real. By doing this, it is easier for the audience to insert themselves into the story.
