Production blog: Constructive criticism

Image
Before I begin filming, I figured that this would be a old time to invite some critics to take a look at what I have so far. I feel that it’s important that take a step back and see what does or does not wrk on film. This means looking back at my sound script, moving script, and storyboards. Seeing as I’m inside due to quarantine, I figured I’d show what I made to my parents. Both of them have been pretty supportive, but they felt that there are a few things I could probably change. For example, I had this idea to use calendars  in my film. I was thinking of showing a shot of a calendar on a wall, where it says the sate of the main characters birthday. The characters birthday is the day that this story is taking place on. I then planned to have the character find himself trapped in an alternate reality, were he sees that its not his birthday. This was meant to be a clue for both the main character and the audience, that he isn’t in his reality anymore. Both my mom and my dad ...

Production Blog: Scheduling

Image
With majority of the props, costumes, and materials gathered for my project, I figured I can begin scheduling the shooting process. When it came to scheduling days for filming, I had to pick dates that I knew that I would be free for. This meant that days were I didn’t have school would probably work best. If I film on a weekend, for example, I don’t really have to worry about redoing different shots. If I work on a weekend, I would have enough free time to use as many shots as needed. So, I’ve decided that a good time to begin filming would be from April 2nd to April 4th. I think this works pretty well, because the 2nd falls on a Friday, which is a day in which I will have no school. Friday then leads relight into the weekend, so I would have three days to begin filming. I say the word “begin” filming because I don’t expect to finish filming in theses three days. I will most likely film from weekend to weekend going forwards. This is because I’ll need to balance my schedule so t...

Production Blog: Technology and Software

Image
Depending on the type of camera and materials you use to make you’re film, you might have drastically different visuals in the final product compared to the vision you had in mind. That’s why technology is incredibly important in you’re film, especially when it comes to cinematography. Seeing as I don’t have the budget for real film equipment, I tried my best with what I had. First there’s the camera. As my main camera I used my phone, the iPhone 11. It has a decent camera fro what its is. Definitely not movie quality, but it works. Then there is my iPad. This is where I plan to do all my editing, specifically because my iPad has the software I need, iMovie. iMovie is a video editing software that is only available on apple products. Its simple, and rather easy to and Ive already gotten used to using the software for past projects. Any footage gathered from my iPhone will be stored in my album to then be uploaded onto my iPad. All the new footage that will now be on my iPad will t...

Production Blog: Locations

Image
One of the key aspects of film is the setting that the story is placed in, otherwise known as the location. Knowing this, it was a bit difficult choosing my locations, especially since there are certain locations that I cant use due to the pandemic. Originally, I was thinking of using the beach, the outskirts of my building, and the park as my locations. A lot of these locations of course were not used mainly because these are areas that are heavily populated. However, I also found that these locations don’t actually fit with my story. Throughout my film, the protagonist finds himself in endless loop as he travels through different realities that look similar to his one. I found that, strangely enough, having fewer locations actually woks better for my film. This is because by having few locations that feel repetitive, I was able to make a feeling of being trapped. I am able to create a film that purposefully makes the audience feel trapped into the story. In my film, I plan to on...

Production blog: Costumes

Image
When gathering the costumes that I was preparing fro my film I ran into a few issues that I hadn’t originally taken into account. I originally planned to have the following: a casual look with pants and short-sleeve, a fancy suit, and pajamas. Seeing as I’m working alone on the project, I will be the only one wearing these costumes. My story is supposed to begin with my character preparing for his birthday the night before. At this point, he is wearing his casual clothes, and he is preparing his suit to wear in the morning. I was originally thing of having the character then be in pajamas since this is at night, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable in pajamas while on camera so I decided not to do this. I also realized that parts of the story wouldn’t add up, because I wanted my character to already be in his suit the next morning. So I then changed the story so that the main character is so excite for his birthday, that he chooses to wear his birthday suit in his sleep. This way, the...

Production Blog: Props

Image
Before beginning the filming process, I needed to gather my props that I would use in my set design. One of the main props I originally chose was a calendar. As our protagonist in the film jumps from reality to to reality, I was thinking of having him look at a calendar in each new reality. With every reality he goes to, the date on the calendar changes. I’m currently contemplating if I should include this detail, because I feel the my opening sequence is already very complicated and bloated. The calendar, however, can be a visual representation that the audience can understand. Another prop I need is the magic crystal that causes the protagonist to travel through realities. Weirdly enough I already have a crystal at home, but its just a prop and its probably not real. One of the only other props that really needed to be used was my cabinet. This cabinet is going to be the location in which the crystal is held. As far as set design, the main other elements used are location and co...

Filming Blog

Image
Before beginning the filming process, I made sure to gather my material and props together. The costumes that I planned to wear didn’t have to change once I began filming, since all my scenes would be filmed indoors. This also meant that none of my locations had to change either. As I stated before, I already planed on filming indoors, so I didn’t have to improvise much on set. I did however, change some parts that were from my storyboard. For example, I added a scene of my story’s protagonist staring at a colander with a specific date on it. Later on in the film, when the character enters another dimension, he finds that Sam Clarence rebut now it says a different date, even though it was the same day. This is meant to be a visual clue for the audience. Other than that, I didn’t end up changing much. I would go on to film my scenes in an order based on locations. By doing this, I didn’t have to waste any time and go back and forth between locations. I would film specific scenes wh...

Title design in details

Image
Titles The opening credits of my film will fade into the screen, with the font color being black against a white background. The font will be something similar to Times new Roman.  More credits will follow after, while still having the font be in black against a white background. Working Title: The title of thesis film is likely to be “Dimensions“ The titles font will be in all caps: SOMETHING ALONG THIS STYLE The titles will appear to fade in and out of screen Titles will disappear after 3 or 4 seconds As stated before, I will be using black font for the titles, contrasted against a white background. It should look like this: Directed  by: DANIEL MARKOV The person's job will appear in lowercase letters, while the name of the person will appear in uppercase letters. Directed  by: DANIEL MARKOV

Storyboard

Image
I found the storyboard process to be very important because it gave me a visual representation of my film. Seeing as I’ve already created a sound and shooting script, the storyboard really adds to that. It creates an image that display the props, lighting, and overall cinematography that will be used in my film. Doing storyboards also allows me to plan out the placement of differnt characters, as well as the overall costume designs those characters will have. By doing this, I am also creating a first draft for my film. I’m creating a basics outline of what I might want on film. By drawing out my storyboards I can sit out ideas that I didn’t like and insert new scenes that interest me. Storyboarding also helps because it allows you to understand how to connect different scenes. As a writer you tend to have many different ideas overlapping in your head. With storyboards, you can earn how to transition all these scenes and ideas into each other in a coherent way.
